Legalism?

And so you ask, how is this not legalism?

Legalism is when I feel that I am more loved by God when I obey Him.

It is not legalism to obey God even when it’s hard because I want to see Him.

It’s not legalism when you spend time in the Word even when it feels temporarily fruitless when you’re doing it with a heart that cries out, “God, I want more of You!” instead of “All right, I’ve done my time for the day. Check.”

Perhaps a good indicator of whether your obedience is done out of legalism or love is who you hope sees your obedience.

Do you think, Okay, I did the hard the thing! I really hope ____ notices! (Mom, Dad, professor, husband, pastor, etc.)

Or do you think, Okay, I did the hard thing! God, if not one single person sees it, that’s okay, because I know that you see me. You know my heart, and I want to quietly and humbly obey because of your great love for me.
