Eighteen

Olivia’s body felt numb finally, a respite from the torture she’d endured. The burning and hunger had subsided. The chaos and confusion gone. Unable to open her eyes, she simply rested. Somehow she knew she was safe, and that someone was with her. She was unconscious in mortal terms, but still lucid at times due to her vampiric strength and senses.

After a few moments, she tried to bring her consciousness forward into the waking world, but only managed a flutter of her eyelids and a moan.

A soothing and familiar voice spoke as a soft hand touched hers. “It’s okay, Olivia. Try to rest. Alex and the others are taking care of things. They’ll find a way to help you.” Stephanie rubbed Olivia’s hand, the strokes soothing.

Olivia made certain her breathing was shut down. The last thing she wanted was to smell Stephanie’s blood. When a twinge of hunger hit her, she pushed that thought away, focusing again on Stephanie’s comforting presence—and the fact that Alex was okay.

It was clear the others had sedated Olivia with enough silver to take her beyond the fiery effects of the poison to the near oblivion it created when a vampire’s blood became saturated with it.

She wanted to talk to Stephanie, to find out more, but forming words seemed an impossible task. She doubted the young vampire would try listening to her thoughts, out of respect, so that would not help her communicate.

Still, she had to find a way. She was Olivia Fournier after all, and if she could push through the silver to fight the Hunters, however briefly, when she’d been held captive, she could do so now, too.

Calling upon every ounce of strength remaining in her preternatural body, she whispered, “Listen…thoughts…”

Stephanie seemed to move closer. “Do you want me to listen to your thoughts? Is that what you mean?”

“Yes…” This time her voice was even less than a whisper, but Stephanie should have been able to hear.

“Okay, go ahead. I’m listening.”

Do you know what happened?

“I’m not sure. From the little I heard it seems like Alex got free before the Hunters gave him whatever they gave you. When he found you, you tried to…”

I remember. I didn’t hurt him, did I? Or anyone else? Most of it is a blur?

“No. You didn’t hurt anyone, and Alex is fine, except for being worried about you.” Stephanie must have read more in Olivia’s mind than she’d intended.

Please do not tell anyone about me and Alexander. I guess it doesn’t matter now, anyway. Unless they can find some cure for whatever was done to me, I’ll have to live out eternity like this. I hope someone will have the decency to put me out of my misery before I go crazy.

Stephanie continued stroking her hand. “Don’t think like that. You know Alex will find a way. Look at what he did to save me and Johnathan.”

If she could have laughed, she would have. All of that was because of me. I can’t understand why he doesn’t hate me like Donovan does.
