CARY CARPENTER

As Prescilla finished Grayson’s makeover, I couldn’t help but smile. “Man, you were sexy before. And Jonathan… wasn’t. But I gotta say you in Jonathan’s body is incredibly sexy.”

Jack reached out and lightly backhanded my stomach. I left out a puff of air and laughed.

“I really didn’t need to know that,” Grayson deadpanned.

It made me smile even more.

“I…agree,” Prescilla said as she looked Grayson up and down. “Not that you weren’t sexy in your body,” she rushed to add.

We all laughed at that. But that’s when her phone rang.

Before I knew it, we were all around the table at Prescilla’s house, having dinner with her moms. And trying to remember to call Grayson Jonathon.

After Grayson apologized for “his” behavior. There was a tense moment or two when Prescilla’s mom saw him enter the house with us.

Poor Grayson. Paying for someone else’s sins.

After his apology, though, we settled in and had a fairly good dinner. But the whole time, I watched the way Jack interacted with “Jonathan.”

Some moments, it was like Jack was overcome with grief.

He couldn’t barely look at Grayson without pain flashing through his eyes. Other times, it was like he was doing everything he could to hold in his anger and not yell at every little move Grayson made.

Poor Jackson. Getting his brother back, but not.

By the time we gave all the ladies hugs goodnight and went back to our house, Jack was wound tighter than a drum.

Tighter than a bow string.

Tighter than a high line wire.

As quickly as I could and still be polite, I bid goodnight to Grayson and Meemo and started pushing Jack back to our room.

My man needed some attention.

As soon as I had the door closed, I leaned up against it and just watched Jack. He plodded over to the bed and threw himself down on it, groaning while he did.

“Do you miss him?” I asked as gently as I possibly could.

Jack rolled over onto his back and looked over at me. “Who?”

I blinked a couple of times then asked, “Jonathan? Your twin who died last night?”

Now Jack blinked slowly. “What? No. I’m just tired from all of this activity today.”

“All day you’ve been looking at Grayson like your heart got ripped out.”

“No, I…” Jack scrubbed his hands over his face. “I feel guilty!”

“What?” I moved to sit next to him on the bed and ran my hand over his buzzed hair. “Why? Confess it all to me. Get it out of your mind.”

“Because I don’t miss him.”

When I didn’t say anything, Jack continued.

“I should miss my brother. My twin. The other half of my soul or whatever.” Jack looked at me, begging me with his eyes, though I wasn’t sure what for. “But instead, I’m relieved that he’s dead. Relieved that I won’t have to deal with his shit anymore. Relieved that he won’t be leeching off of our grandparents. Relieved that I’m not going to get a call from the police in the middle of the night to tell me he’s in the drunk tank or have to deal with any of his other immature messes.
