Chapter 12

Nathan forced himself to meet her gaze even though it was difficult to watch the emotions playing out across her face–disbelief, suspicion, fear, anger–and back again.

“You… You’re a werewolf.” She repeated, more a statement than a question. He couldn’t read what she was thinking, but his sensitive nose could smell it. She was scared. The kind of scared that told him despite her doubtful expression, she believed him. “You realize how ridiculous that sounds, right?”

He nodded. “I do.”

“And you just expect me to believe that?”

Cringing at the sharpness in her voice, Nathan looked down at the table between them, where his note still sat on top of her pad. “Do I gotta recount every detail of what happened for you to believe me? I can, but I don’t think either of us wants to relive that.”

“You said you were a friend of John’s.” Greer accused, her voice wavering, her hands balling into fists at her sides. “Say I believe you. Did he know?”

“Yes. He knew. I got hit by a logging truck in my were form, once. He found me. Saved me.”

“Why would you do that to me if you were such good friends? To his own niece!”

Well, looks like getting her to believe you are a werewolf is going to be the easy part.

“That’s why I came back. I owe you an explanation.”

She backed up a step and folded her arms over her chest defensively. “If you’re a werewolf, why are you human right now? It’s a full moon, isn’t it?”

“It is. Is that where you want me to start?” He asked, careful to keep his tone placating and his posture neutral. His wolf didn’t like her tone, and the scent of her fear had it itching to get out. Thankfully, it couldn’t. Not tonight, at least.

“I… I don’t know that I want you to start at all.”

She sounded so conflicted, so confused. Nathan hated it.

“The curse isn’t like people think,” he began slowly, taking advantage of the lack of conviction in her last statement to try. “You’re only human on the full moon. The rest of the time, you’re a monster. I mean, I’m still in there, but it’s like an aggressive prick pushed you out of the driver's seat and into the passengers, and he never has the same destination in mind that you did.”

Greer was frowning at him, her forehead marked with worry lines as she continued to eye him warily from her place near the wall. She didn’t speak, though, didn’t tell him to shut up and get out.

“I was coming back to say goodbye to the cabin, to the memories. I’ve been a were for ten years now. John was my only friend. He still treated me like a man, and the wolf liked him. Probably had something to do with him saving our life. Anyway… I came back, and I saw you, and everything went sideways.”

“So, this is my fault?”

“No, Greer. No. I didn’t mean that at all. Please, let me finish. I know you don’t owe me anything, but… please.
