It was mid-morning two days later when Franki remembered that her birthing classes started that evening. A nurse midwife from Amarillo was coming out to Washita once a week to conduct the classes for Franki and three other pregnant women in the area.

Now what was she going to do? Virgil was supposed to be her birthing coach, but that was obviously out of the question. Even though his doctor thought Virgil might get to come home within the next week, he certainly wasn’t going to be in any shape to sit in the floor and pant with her.

“Ada Mae,” she said, turning to her boss. “What’s on your schedule tonight?”

“It’s Thursday. My night to drive over to the nursing home in Amarillo and feed Mama.”

“Oh, yeah,” Franki said, immediately crossing Ada off her impromptu list of potential coaches. Ada had three sisters, two in Amarillo and one in Dalhart. Between the four of them they took turns feeding the mother, who, among other serious ailments, suffered from Alzheimer’s, her supper every night. “How’s she doing these days?”

“About the same. She’s in pretty good spirits most of the time, even if she doesn’t know any of us anymore.”

Franki fought back a shudder at the thought of one day ending up not knowing who she was, who anyone was. They better damn well get that cure for Alzheimer’s working before she hit old age.

“Did you need something for tonight?” Ada asked.

Hmm. Did she tell Ada what she needed and let her fret over not being able to help, or did she clam up and have Ada figure it out for herself and get hurt because Franki hadn’t asked her?

All things considered, Franki picked fretting over hurt feelings. “No big deal,” she said. “Tonight’s my first birthing class. Virgil was supposed to go with me, be my coach. There’s no need for you go rearrange your schedule. I’ll get Luanne to go with me.”

“Well, hell, girl,” Ada said. “I’m flattered you’d ask me. But I’ll deny it with my dying breath,” she added with a sly grin. “You know I’d do it in a minute, but there’s nobody available for Mama tonight but me.”

“I wouldn’t want you to skip going to see her for me anyway,” Franki said. “I’ll just give Luanne a call.”

But Luanne couldn’t do it, either. She was home with a nasty head cold. Since finding out she was pregnant Franki had made it a point to stay as far away from people with contagious ailments as she possibly could. Besides, she couldn’t ask those other women in the class to put up with someone hacking and sneezing and blowing all night long. Not to mention expecting Luanne to have a coherent thought in her head when she felt so bad. The poor girl sounded about as sick as anybody Franki had ever heard.

“You just curl up on the couch with a hot toddy and watch soaps all day,” Franki told her. “It’s the only thing for a cold.”

“Don’t I know it.
