Eva had picked Dan up around five hours after the Galvan farce finished. She’d said two, but two turned into five. Normally Dan wasn’t great with waiting, but when it came to finding out who the bastards ruining his life were, he was the model of patience. Right now he was doing even more waiting, but he had to admit he needed it. He was flat-out tired from the stress and adrenaline of watching Galvan’s betting salon, arguing with Eva, and then trying to locate Laura while pretending not to notice Eva’s incredible tardiness. He had even tried her mobile phone twice, but it went to voicemail, and she didn’t call back. So this was how it was now. Eva was acting like she had all the balls in this game, which she did, and she was keeping them for herself. To be quite honest, as gorgeous as he found those pale green eyes and the hair like autumn, he was getting tired of the Ice Queen act. At six she’d called him without apology and had said she had just been brain-storming the case with office girl Jess. He hoped this Jess girl was not as biased against his ideas as Eva was. At least she would have a fresh pair of eyes – without those blinkers. As Parker had said and Remy had validated – Dan was a marked man. Okay. So he had the culprits wrong, possibly, (or at least Parker did) but anyone would have to admit this wasn’t just the product of a deluded imagination. Eva had been a witness in this for crying out loud. No, she was making him suffer just because she could.
