In the morning, Miss Mary hurried Sarah and Jesse down the street to a brick house with a carriage outside. A man named William Still put a few coins in Sarah’s hand. He said it would buy them passage on a steamboat to travel up Lake Champlain.

“You will find work in Vermont,” Mr. Still promised.

“Is it safe there?” Sarah asked.

“Safer than here. The slave catchers can only earn so much money bringing you in. It’s hardly worth their time to be chasing you up into the mountains.”

The man holding the horse’s reins shifted in his seat. “We must be off.”

“Mr. Brown will take you to Whitehall, New York, where you’ll board the steamboat,” Mr. Still said, handing Sarah some papers. “If anyone stops you along the way, show these documents.”

“How’s that gonna help us?” Jesse asked.

“They’re forged freedom papers,” Mr. Still said. “They say you were freed when your owner passed away.”

Sarah nodded and tucked the papers in her sack. She and Jesse climbed up into the carriage, and Jesse slapped his knees. “Come on, dog!”

Ranger jumped into the carriage and curled up at Jesse’s feet.

When the wheels started rolling, Sarah reached into her pocket and touched the feather. Thank you, Mama. They weren’t free yet. But every mile between them and the slave catchers helped.
