Libraries Can Be Cool

A combination of bar, cafe, restaurant and library, the Bookworm Offline map Google map ( Shūchóng; 6586 9507; www.beijingbookworm.com; Bldg 4, Nansanlitun Lu, mains from ¥70; 9am-2am; ; Tuanjiehu) is a Běijīng institution. There are 16,000-plus books you can browse while sipping your coffee or working your way through the extensive wine list. The food maintains the bookish theme, with sandwiches (¥42) and dishes named after famous authors. But the Bookworm is much more than just an upmarket cafe. It’s one of the epicentres of Běijīng cultural life and hosts lectures, poetry readings, a Monday-night quiz and a very well regarded annual book festival. Any author of note passing through town gives a talk here. Check the website for upcoming events. There’s a roof terrace in summer and a nonsmoking area.
