Chapter Sixteen

Scott was still pondering Sage’s words as he unlocked his car and thought about what to do now. She had dropped him off here, and he told himself she had not sounded regretful about having to leave him to take her friend Jessie to her appointment.

What the hell did she mean, make his peace with Last Stand? If she meant stop hating it, he figured not thinking about it at all was pretty much the same thing, and he accomplished that most of the time. It was only in his head now, churning things up, because he was in the damn place.

So now he had a long afternoon stretching out before him, in the last place he wanted to be. Encountering his father and brother in town had convinced him walking around Last Stand was not what he wanted to do. But going back to his motel room and holing up didn’t appeal; he was long done with hiding from the people he shared genes—albeit not the right ones—with.

Shooting had taken the edge off—and shooting that treasured M1 with such history had truly been an honor—but he was still restless. What he needed was something physical to do, and he pondered hitting his room, changing clothes, and running a few miles. He’d settled on that and was mentally planning a route as he opened the driver’s door. It was then that the big, white building a couple of blocks down caught his eye. And he changed his mind.

Father Nunes, clad in worn work clothes and dusted with sawdust, welcomed him with a smile, which widened when he asked if he wanted that help they’d talked about.

“I need some work to do. Something else to think about,” Scott said.

“And the strength to get through tomorrow?” the priest suggested.

Scott blinked. “It always amazes me,” he said wryly, “how everybody in this town seems to know everything.”

“I’m hurt,” the man said in a tone of umbrage that was clearly mocking. “Here I thought it was just my extraordinary powers of perception.”

“At least you’re not claiming divine information,” Scott quipped back.

“Would that it worked that way.” This time the man’s exaggerated sigh made him laugh. “But work I can definitely supply. No payment besides my thanks and a rather tasteless ham sandwich for lunch, I’m afraid.”

“Thanks’ll do. I downed a huge plate of Valencia’s huevos rancheros late this morning.”

“An excellent choice,” the man said. “Do any carpentry in the service?”

“I was a Marine. We did everything with nothing.”

That got him a wide smile. And the man ushered him inside.

The work of building shelves and storage for this room—which was to be a meeting space for various groups attached to the church—turned out to be exactly what Scott had needed. And the satisfaction of watching the work progress had eased both the knot in his gut and the turmoil in his mind. And Father Nunes was a whistle while you work kind of guy—a very good one—and Scott found himself trying to guess if the tunes he was hearing were actual songs or if the man was simply making it up as he went.
