David was getting out of his clothes. He looked down at the sheets, at the birth certificate he had picked up from Logic’s bedroom. Too was shutting the doors of the house when he struck a match to the paper: the red ink began to wither away in flames. Blue. Yellow. Orange. Gone.

Too smelled the burning from the kitchen. “David?”

He did not respond.

“What’s burning?”

Under his breath, he whispered an answer that belonged to God.

Logic was on the other side of the wall. She was no longer on her knees but standing next to the window, her hand pressed against the glass, where she was sure she had heard the voice of the ex-con, humming alongside her in prayer.
