As they drove through San Antonio, Fleet said, “On the way back we’ll stop for the night and stay someplace on the River Walk. It could be romantic.” He glanced over at her. “With the right person. But we’re close enough to Three Rivers territory that we might be spotted. So let’s keep going and stop for the night on the other side of Houston.” “Houston,” she repeated.

“Yeah. When we go through Houston you’re gonna understand how outrageous it is for you to call me a city boy.”

All the way to New Orleans, another day and a half in the car together, they told each other their stories, learned about likes and dislikes, talents, quirks, peeves, and dreams.

Dani talked about pine forests, moss covered trees, and large expanses of water, and the Atchafalaya Basin like they were visiting another planet. And Fleet was certain he’d never had so much fun. Her excitement was a drug that he was already addicted to. He drove straight to an out of the way bed and breakfast built in the traditional

Moorish fashion, around a courtyard. It was a couple of blocks away from the main tourist drags, but werewolves didn’t have the same concerns that human tourists did. Safety just wasn’t an issue.

They took their keys to the room and climbed the stairs to check it out. Dani went straight to the louvered shutters and opened the doors to the balcony overlooking the courtyard with fountain. It was the most charming thing she’d ever seen.

“This is wonderful,” she said.

Fleet came up behind her, put his hands on her waist and looked past her. “Yeah.

So. Wanna go shopping?”

Dani could honestly say she’d never been on a shopping ‘spree’ in her life. When she got new things, they were purchased one at a time. As needed.

“I do, but I also feel kind of funny about the idea of having you buy me a bunch of stuff. I can pay for some things. My job with the properties…”

“Dani. Stop right there. In two and a half weeks what’s mine is yours. What difference does eighteen days make really? Let’s just say that whatever you get is a Yule gift. Except for the dress. The dress will be part of my mating present to you.”

He saw the light jump into her eyes. “Really?”

“Absolutely. I can’t have my future mate show up in just any old thing.” She laughed. “But right now we both need to shop for stuff we can wear while playing tourist.”

“How do you play tourist?”

“We’re gonna see the sights, eat the food, hear the music, and not worry about looking like we’re in love.”

She stopped. “Love?”

“Wow. Where did that come from? I guess it just bubbled up.”

She wasn’t about to let that go. “Fleet. That wasn’t an accident, you saying that. Is that how you feel?”

“You know, one of the things I…” he smiled, “like about you most is how direct you are. I will never have to agonize over trying to figure out what you’re thinking.
