A Pendulum Divination

by Kristin Madden

The pendulum is one of the simplest of all divination tools. It is so easy to use that even a young child can learn. It is a simple, yet powerful method that can become as complex as you need it to be.

While beautiful pendulums may be purchased in stores, just about anything that can hang on a rope or chain may be used to make a pendulum. This eliminates the need for ornate or expensive tools. At various times, I have used a ring hung on a chain, a crystal necklace, as well as a formal, weighted pendulum.

For pendulum divination, it is a good idea at the start to limit your questions to those with “yes” or “no” answers. Be simple and specific in the wording you use. Hold the question in your mind, just as you would during a tarot spread, as you allow the pendulum to divine for you.

To begin, hold the chain and allow the pendulum to hang freely. Experiment with holding it at different lengths. A longer chain or rope will result in a slower swing than will a pendulum held closer to your hand. If you need assistance keeping your arm up or holding it steady, rest your forearm on your other arm or on a few books piled on top of each other. Be sure the pendulum is still, and take a deep breath, relaxing your body and mind. You may want to ask your spirit guides or deities for their help in this work.

Ask the pendulum to show you a “yes” answer. Take note of the motions the pendulum makes. This will usually be either a circular motion in one specific direction or a side-to-side motion. Then ask the pendulum to show you the “no” answer. This should differ from the “yes” in some obvious way. If it does not, take another deep breath and ask again. Allow enough time for your body and mind to relax so the answers can flow through you and the pendulum.

Once the responses are clear, you may ask your question. If you really want to test it, ask the same question more than once. If you cannot get a clear answer, try to rephrase the question to be more specific.

Once you have gained some success with simple yes or no responses, you might have to move up to working with pendulum charts to make the answers to additional questions even more accurate. Pendulum charts often take the form of pie charts or half circles divided into three or more pieces. You might want to create a chakra or body-mind-spirit chart to help identify the areas of your life that need attention or have some bearing on the question. The pendulum will be drawn to one area of the chart more than others. The indicating response should be determined fully before moving on to other questions.

Pendulums are also wonderful tools for diagnosing illness, injury, or energy problems. When using a pendulum for these purposes, simply hold it two or three inches over the body.
