6 Socio-Economic Profile of the Sample

Introduction

The structurally marginal position of the poor, predominantly low-caste, communities in Amritsar cannot be addressed without considering the social, economic and political obstacles which they are confronted with, A number of factors will be identified in this chapter regarding the structural position of the poor. The relationship between caste and religious identities with employment and migratory processes, though changing, continues to have significance to the material well-being of the poor. For instance, the experience of partition refugees, even to today, has marked them as a distinctly separate community from other more recent migrants from other parts of India. On another level, the conflation and overlapping of various social identities, as will be addressed in this chapter, have revealed a highly differentiated social structure within low-income communities in Amritsar. This, in turn, has had repercussions on occupational opportunities, income security and the scope for upward mobility within these communities.
