Principalities, Powers, Rulers, and Hosts
On the other side of the battlefield, I want to take a few moments to outline the types of demonic activity the enemy employs in order to erect strongholds of the mind. Now, I know this is a book on the present-day deliverance ministry of Jesus Christ; but as I have said in other writings, I am not going to debate whether or not a Christian can have a demon. After forty-some years of full-time ministry, I am pretty well set in my convictions concerning this, and it is pointless to discuss the semantics of demonic oppression in a Christian's walk. Let it suffice to say if a Christian cannot be "possessed" by a demon, he or she most certainly can be influenced or suppressed or oppressed by one---not in their inward spirit-man, for that is the residing place of the Holy Spirit; but in the soulish realm or in the body, at the very least, the demonic can hamper a Christian's lifestyle. In any case, deliverance is needed. Fair enough? Let's move on.
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." (Ephesians 6:10-13)
This whole passage is in the context of putting on the full armor of God, and it relates specifically to "brethren"---those who are in Christ. Paul is wanting to educate the Ephesian church on the wiles (tricks) of the devil. He outlines a sort of rank and file for the spiritual entities that we "wrestle" against.
This word pale ("pah-lay," Strong's #3823) is only used one time in the New Testament, and it means most succinctly "wrestle." *smile* "A contest between two in which each endeavors to throw the other, and which is decided when the victor is able to hold his opponent down with his hand upon his neck." The root of this word means "to vibrate," and in another form means "to cast, throw or scatter something without caring where it falls," even referring to dung.
"Principalities" is arche ("ar-hay," where the "H" sounds like one is clearing the throat; Strong's #746), and this word signifies an individual who holds the highest, loftiest position in rank and authority. It is speaking of the "origin or beginning of something," the first in a series, and therefore, the leader. It means the "extremity of something (like the corners of a sail)," and it refers to the "first place of rule (magistracy.)" These are the highest and strongest of the demonic host. This would be like the "Prince of Persia" in Daniel 10.
