Aesop told the fable about an old crow in the wilderness. The crow had not had anything to drink in a long time and became very thirsty. He came upon a jug that had a small amount of water in the bottom. The old crow desperately poked his beak into the jug trying to reach the water. Sadly, his beak couldn’t reach the bottom of the jug. But the wise old crow thought long and hard and came up with a brilliant idea. He started picking up pebbles, and one by one he dropped them into the jug. As the pebbles accumulated in the bottom of the jug, the water rose in the container. Finally the old crow was able to quench his thirst.

This fable can help us understand the way God works out His plan in our world. If each of us would drop our own little pebble into the vessel and use the gifts God has given to us, God’s kingdom would spread throughout the earth. We could obey His command to love one another by reaching out to at-risk youth, serving on a committee, or visiting our lonely neighbors. And God would get the glory.
