Mary put a finger to her lips, reminding Martha not to speak so loudly. Mary had bright red polish on her long fingernails and she was carefully trying to wipe a cup dry. My glance caught Martha’s and I could tell she was thinking the same thing. It would be mighty difficult to do any housekeeping with those fingernails. I could not imagine someone not doing anything at all in their own home, for their own children, or even for themselves. How sad, I thought.

Aunt Martha had come to the same conclusion, for she was now telling Mary about all the hard work Mama had to do and how she, Aunt Martha, took great pride in looking after her own children too. She told Mary about all the hours Mama had spent at the sewing machine to make her own wedding dress and our clothes as well. Mary pursed her lips and shook her head, sadly.

I decided to go outside for fresh air. I was heading for the rubber tube at the tree when I noticed someone sitting in it. “Billy?” There was no response. I walked closer and took the rope in my hand beside his. “Billy? What are you doing here?”
