Working life

As I said, my back issues meant I had to take some time off work, which was frustrating as I hate letting people down. I know some people think I have a pretty cruisy life, turning up for shows a dozen or so times a month, where all I do is stand up in front of people and talk for a couple of hours. Piece of cake, right?

What they don’t get is how exhausting it is for me to communicate with spirit and pass messages on to a room full of people. It requires a huge amount of concentration, which I try to explain to people by saying: ‘Imagine for example how much effort you would need to drive from Auckland to Wellington in one go – in reverse.’ Often it feels like I’ve done that after a show.

I have to concentrate hard to tune into spirit’s frequency, so to speak, and then pay a lot of attention to what they are showing and telling me. It’s not just an easy matter of saying ‘Your gran says she’s glad she was able to make you your wedding dress before she died’. Instead I might be shown a sewing machine, some white fabric, a church and a bridal bouquet, and I will have to figure it out from that.

Because of the way I work, I tend to get loads of spirit people turning up at the same time. The audience might see me standing on stage staring into space or mumbling to myself, but in fact I am trying to keep spirit under control. I might have an elderly couple for the lady I am reading for, plus a young man in spirit who died in an accident. There could also be a couple of babies in the background.

Then there’s a woman who’s turned up for a man in the middle of the front row and is trying to butt in, and a whole busload of people waiting to come through for a couple a few rows back. It can get chaotic, and I have to be on top of my game to sort it all out and make sure I am getting the right readings for the right people.

Afterwards I stay to sign copies of my books, and I don’t leave the venue until every single person who wants a book signed has got my scribble in their copy.

When I do shows I usually schedule at least three or four in a row in a particular region of New Zealand to justify the travel expenses, and there can be a fair amount of driving between locations. So I do get home feeling pretty worn out.

When I’m not on the road, I’m not at home with my feet up – except for those occasions when my back packs up on me and I can’t do anything other than lie on the couch. Being a single dad to my daughter Jade – my son Javan is now in his mid-twenties, can you believe it? – keeps me on my toes.
