Syntactically, the verb frame changes from intransitive (no NP complement after the verb) to transitive (one NP complement after the verb) â see Chapter 6. Not all Process-focus verbs, however, can widen their focus in this way, e.g.
The spider crawled along Sarahâs arm (Process-focus, internally caused, intransitive)
*Alice crawled the spider along Sarahâs arm (widened-focus, externally caused, transitive)
The chickens squawked (Process-focus, internally caused, intransitive) *The fox squawked the chickens (widened-focus, externally caused, transitive).
We can now consider verbs with a wider focus, whose meaning includes both a process and a state component or an act that triggers a process (Section 8.3).
