The Return of the Goats by John Lavery

This painting is not my kind of thing. I don’t really do pastoral: goats, the forest, a farmer, for God’s sake. I think of myself as more of an urban guy, an up-to-date guy, a way-we-live-now guy. But the hazy twilight-or-dawn atmosphere drew me in: the forest as a vestigial zone, a numinous border between reality and dream. Not to mention the goats. It worked its mazy charm on me. I fell under its spell. I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

A painting can be like a lover; you wake up suddenly in the middle of yourself and ask: what on earth was I thinking? It catches you unawares. It appeals to some aspect of yourself you don’t entirely understand or acknowledge. Thought is beside the point. Rather ask: what possessed me? What holds me still?
