SET THE SPIRITUAL ATMOSPHERE

God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden with dominion over it to keep it prospering and protected. When Adam discovered that the “old serpent” had been whispering to his wife, he had the authority to kick it out—but he chose not to do so. Instead, Adam chose to rebel against the specific instruction God gave him not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17). Sin found a way into that garden and enticed Eve through her mind, will, and emotions. Eve was deceived, but not Adam. He could have put an end to it, but he joined in instead.

Genesis 3:6 tells us that Eve “saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasing to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise” (MEV). Satan went after the soul to sway her decision. He tempted her with something better. Notice this temptation is rooted in pride, the very thing that brought him down. Take a look at your life right now. Is there a hole in the fence, a broken window, or maybe a wide-open front door? Is there pride in your life?

You have the ability to set the spiritual atmosphere in your life and your home. Whether you are single, newly married, or a parent, if you take your relationship with God seriously, God will empower you to live a life worthy of Him. It is when you don’t take your God-given authority seriously that you empower the enemy. Fathers and mothers can be spiritual leaders in the family when they lead by example, exemplifying Christ. When you make decisions that empower the enemy, he is quite happy to walk in the dominion that you forfeit. The decisions we make each day will affect the spiritual atmosphere of our homes. The wisest man in the world, Solomon, said, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control” (Prov. 25:28, NIV). When you have no self-control, you leave yourself and your home open for anything to attack. The devil doesn’t even need a foothold in a situation like that. Demons can come and go freely through the doors you’ve left open to them.
