Chapter 18

Luke knows every bar in Boston. He’s a virtual encyclopedia of all the upper-end taverns. Of course, he doesn’t know the seedy little dives, but he’d never go into a place like that anyway.

The place to be on Saturday night is a smoky little establishment named Moonlight, where we hope to be free from prying eyes. Luke not only knows every bar in the city, but apparently knows the people who run every bar in the city because despite the place being extremely crowded, we get a fantastic table right next to where the singer will be performing.

“These seats are great,” I comment.

Luke winks at me. “Being rich and influential has its perks, huh?”

We place our drink orders, but as the waiter walks away, Luke has turned a bit pale. I look at him in concern. “What’s wrong?”

“Rebecca,” he mumbles.

Rebecca. As I recall, that’s the name of his last girlfriend. The one he said was just dating him for his money. “Do you want to leave?”

“No, it’s okay,” he says, although he kind of looks like the answer is yes. “I’m sorry, I don’t want you to think I’m not over her or something. Because I am over her. I hate her, to be honest.”

“That might be worse.”

He flashes me a pained look. “The thing about Rebecca was… she wouldn’t have sex with me. She refused.”

I stare at him. “You’re joking.”

He flinches. “I wish I were. I mean, I did… well, you know. For her. But when it came to anything else, she had a bunch of excuses. One after another. She wouldn’t have sex with me. She didn’t even seem to want to kiss me. Finally… I mean, we were together for a year. So I pressed her, and she admitted she wasn’t interested.”

“Well…” I clear my throat. “There are some women who aren’t interested in sex…”

“Oh, she was interested in sex. She just wasn’t interested in sex with me.”

My heart aches for him. “Luke…”

“And she had this whole speech about how it would be a good thing for me.” He winces. “I get to have a hot girlfriend, so nobody thinks I’m a big loser. And she gets to use my bank account. Win-win—those were her exact words. I felt like an idiot. A whole year I dated her…”

Suddenly his reluctance to do anything beyond going down on me makes total sense. His last girlfriend refused to have sex with him—didn’t even want to kiss him. That’s one of those things that’s got to stay with you. That bitch.

If I were Rebecca and I had done what she did to Luke, I would have wanted to stay far away from him. But apparently she and I think very differently because about two minutes later, I’m face to face with Luke’s ex-girlfriend.

Rebecca is exactly the type of girl Luke used to date in college, meaning she looks like a model. Several orders of magnitude better-looking than me at my best. I can’t help but notice she’s got a huge rock on the ring finger of her left hand.
