Chapter Ten

The noise made by the crowd gathered at Rebecca Upton’s house was nothing new to Dave. He’d grown up with three sisters and a large, extended family, and didn’t blink an eye at the mix of generations, from a brand new baby to an elderly aunt, or the way they interacted, talking over each other, laughing and cutting up, and generally doing what families did. The difference between one and the other was that with this crowd, the age of the individual couldn’t necessarily be deduced from how old they looked, with the exception of the very young.

At lunch, he managed to squeeze in next to Dani at a table full of other women, mostly Dani’s adoptive sisters. Moira, the guest of honor, sat across from him, her hair a muted fire under the early autumn sun. Earlier, Dani had let it slip that Moira had been born in the sixteenth century and never left her homeland, if she could help it.

Rebecca’s next youngest daughter, Charlotte, sat at the end of the table to his right, bouncing a toddler on her knee, with another of her children sitting between her and Dave.

Margaret, a cold-eyed woman Dani had introduced as one of Rebecca’s eldest children, sat to Dani’s left next to Anya, Rebecca’s aunt, who appeared to be about eighty, maybe ninety, but was probably a lot older.

All of Rebecca’s daughters bore a strong resemblance to their mother, with small differences taken from their fathers. Charlotte’s hair was a mousy brown, Margaret’s ash blonde, but the shapes of their faces and the way they held themselves reminded him strongly of Rebecca.

Dave let their conversation flow by without participating, and they ignored him, discussing childbirth, men, and other womanly matters as if he weren’t there. He didn’t mind. It was fascinating to hear the women talk and to see how Dani interacted with her family. She was at ease here, relaxed and loose in a way he’d never seen her before. As the conversation slipped around him, he watched her, touched her in small ways, and enjoyed the almost absent-minded way she leaned into him.

“So, Dani, how many hubbas does this one rate?” Charlotte asked, grinning slyly.

The question sharpened his focus on the discussion.

Dani held up four fingers and wiggled them, and the other women arched their eyebrows in his direction. Even Margaret shot him an appraising look.

“What?” he asked Dani, and she shook her head, mischief lighting her emerald eyes.

“Is that with or without clothes on?” asked Charlotte.

“Without.” Dani slid a sideways glance at Dave. “In the shower.”

Heat stole up his cheeks and he gritted his teeth. Of all the things she could’ve shared, why did it have to be of him naked?

Moira groaned. “Poseidon. The bastard always was her favorite.”

Dani inspected her fingernails, then casually buffed them against her shirt. “Personified.”

“Were you in the shower with him?” Margaret asked, her voice as cold as her eyes.

“Not that time.”

“Well, now, if I had a man to look at me like
