Chapter 24

Gabriel

Gabriel tried to swallow the grin threatening to overtake his face for the third time that day. It had hurt when he left, but it was nothing compared to the agony of resisting the bond. Although the tug in his chest was worse now that his two halves had been reunited, the pain of separating was less.

When she had bared her soul to him, speaking the truths he’d felt for so long, he’d finally understood. She was more than a perfect vessel to house his lost soul. She was the same desolate creature, longing to be made whole. She was his equal in all things.

They had spent the night slipping seamlessly between vocal and mental conversation, and through it all, their unified soul rejoiced.

He had expected it to feel as it had before—when his soul was intact and he’d never known the pain of being torn in two, but it was something new. He never could have fathomed it would feel better.

When he left, she’d cried, asking him to stay. It destroyed him. Did his siblings feel this way leaving their other halves? Adalaide understood how important his work was though, not just to her but to all humans. Sanura must be stopped; her creatures ended. Now more than ever, he was invested in the outcome.

He stopped at Uriel’s door. “Brother.”

Uriel greeted him, grasping both arms. “I hear congratulations are in order.”

Gabriel dipped his head. “Thank you. I am here on another matter, though. The reashes in America have reported a surge in nasdaqu-ush. I need all the support I can muster to find their maker and end her once and for all.”

“Would that I could, but I am tied up in the war in Syria.”

“If I come with you to curb the demon horde in Syria would you follow me to North America to quell the growing nasdaqu-ush population directly after?”

Uriel nodded, wrapping an arm around Gabriel’s shoulder. “It’s good to have you back, brother.”

They left, Gabriel stopping at Dina’s door to ask her to look after Adalaide while he was away. She gave her word, voicing her concerns in the same breath.

As Gabriel and Uriel touched down on mortal soil, they were immersed in battle. They fought tirelessly through one week and then the next, healing one another on too many occasions to count. By night, they watched over the humans as the demon populous moved among the soldiers, and both seraphim were helpless to stop them.

Their presence was the only thing keeping the demons from inhabiting and killing by night, and so Gabriel stood vigil beside his brother as thoughts of Adalaide drifted through his mind. He longed to go to her, touch her cheek and hear her laugh, but there was no end to the demons’ number, and the battle showed no sign of waning.

It was February or March—he’d lost track of mortal time, and the nights he’d spent waiting for the numbness to wear off could not be counted—when Dina landed beside him.

“She’s back.”

He sat up, groaning as the latest ache settled uncomfortably, healing too slowly for his liking.
