A comb, two deflated balloons, a raisin box, raisins (not in the box), peanut shells, two toy cars, half-crushed crackers, a toy motorcycle, a button, candy, two pens, one melted crayon, a barrette, empty gum wrappers, and six pennies. What do these items have in common?

They’re likely to greet any mom who lifts the backseat of her car to vacuum. You’ve likely found similar items when going through pockets before doing laundry. Such finds are all a part of being a mother of young children.

Sometimes it may be hard to remember that you have a name besides Mom, or to believe that your house will ever be clean again—that someday you will be something other than a chauffeur. But only look into the faces of your children and you’ll see that being a mother really is worth all the clutter of childhood.
