The kids had already gone to bed, and Alex and Kerry sat across one another at the kitchen table. It wasn’t the conversation Alex had expected to have that night with his wife. Sure, he’d told her about Scott’s seeming disinterest in the beachfront property. But once he mentioned what Scott had said about Justin, there was no changing the subject.

“So Scott told you that you’re the one Justin imitates? Just last week you vented about how he always ignores you.”

“I know,” conceded Alex, “and he does ignore what I say. But he imitates what I do, even if he doesn’t like it.” “The same way Heather copies me…and with her only being three, just imagine how much more she’s going to copy me as she gets older.” Kerry instantly flashed back to earlier that day when she saw Heather rubbing her lips together like she did after applying lipstick. “And what, you’re just supposed to choose to spend time with him?” she asked.

Kerry’s smile wavered a little on that last item. Those other things were great, but… “But I thought you couldn’t take a week off from work for that.”

“I could if my goals were different. I’d just have to plan for it.” He shared what he and Scott had discussed about defaulting to earning money if he didn’t plan to do other things and saw a tiny flash of understanding in his wife.

“It’s like my spinning classes,” she said with a new hint of insight. “I know they’re good for me, but if I don’t schedule them, there’s no way I’ll show up. Other things come up, and no matter how good my intentions are, working out gets pushed aside. So, what are we supposed to plan?” She pulled her phone off its charger and opened up the following week’s calendar. Alex followed suit. They stared at their own screens then glanced at each other.

“And when exactly?” mumbled Alex. This was going

to be interesting…
