Cade glanced at his watch and did the math in his head. He hadn’t seen Caroline in way too long, and she was nowhere to be found in the hospital. Glad she wore the watch he gave her, he could find her if he needed to. She’d kill him if she knew the watch was a GPS tracking device, allowing him to know her location. She was much too curious to be alone in the swamps with no one looking out for her. The device was linked to an app on his phone and showed she was at Dupree’s. She was probably just fine, but he wanted to go anyway. It was after midnight, and he knew she hadn’t eaten anything. Still, he had a familiar uneasy feeling in his gut that he’d learned to trust.

By the time he pulled into the parking lot, his stomach churned near to hurling. When he was overseas, he had always gotten this same feeling before something bad happened. That fact alone made him restless. He stepped up the pace through the parking lot and as he approached the door, what he saw made his heart flop and his temper flare.

That bastard Yankee had his hand on Caroline’s face, and he was staring at her like he was about to kiss her. Caroline just stood there with a blank look. It was an expression he had seen several times himself last year. A string of profanities that would make his momma smack the back of his head came streaming from his mouth. When did this trouble-making prick get in town?

Caroline had assured Cade she wasn’t angry with him, so why was she here having drinks with her ex? Without telling him? What the hell was Trevor doing here, anyway?

Cade studied them. Trevor was drinking, but Caroline didn’t have anything. Cade took a deep breath to calm himself before he approached them.

“Everything okay?” They hadn’t even seen him walk up. Trevor flinched at the sound of his voice. Cade glared at him for a few long seconds before softening his gaze on Caroline. She had Trevor's keys in her hand and an apologetic look in her eyes. Callahan was clearly incapable of driving, and Caroline obviously felt obligated in some way to babysit his drunken ass. At least that explained her blank expression. She must have been trying to decide what to do.

Cade fought the urge to mark up his pretty-boy face again like he had last summer. That was too much fun, but Caroline wouldn’t like it. She didn’t like it then because Trevor was her fiancé, but now that she was Cade’s girl, if that dickhead so much as gives her a dirty look, Cade would take him down.

Trevor had gotten physical with Caroline last year, and it had taken everything Cade had not to snap the son-of-a-bitch’s neck right then and there. A part of Cade wished Trevor would raise his hand to her so he could demolish him. But, for now he would be the understanding, supportive boyfriend to Caroline and help her with this pest.
