Grabbing the remote control, I flicked on the television. I was mentally exhausted. Flipping through the channels, I felt a random tightness in my chest when I reached the local nightly news. Both Ethan and I halted as I turned up the volume to hear what the anchorman was saying.

“Breaking national new this evening from our Florida affiliate. Portions of travel hotspot South Beach in Miami, Florida have been shut down tonight following the mysterious car explosion of world renowned attorney Landon McNamara.” The voice of the man identified as Adam Lighting reported as a photo of my lawyer came into focus in the upper right corner of the television screen. Beneath his photo his date of birth through today’s date appeared. “This footage, captured by a tourist who was visiting South Beach from Virginia, shows Mr. McNamara getting into his vehicle moments before it explodes. WNJB Syracuse does warn that the footage is graphic and may not be suitable for younger viewers.

My mouth hung open as I watched my smiling attorney swaggering out of his office like I had seen him do so many times before. He looked mellow, as he usually was, without a care in the world. He didn’t rush, he didn’t believe in doing so, and the final day of his life had been no exception. Pulling open the door, he slid inside and sat his briefcase on the passenger seat. With the twist of the key into the ignition flames erupted from beneath the luxury automobile. The glass shattered, breaking away from the windows to avoid the fire that engulfed it as the burning car hung helplessly into the air before falling back down to the ground as nothing more than a heap of charring metal with a jarring thud.

“Landon McNamara was known for his unprecedented ninety-eight percent win ratio and gained national notoriety when he was rumored to being vetted by the President to take on the posting of United States Attorney General after the removal of former Attorney General Maria Steinmark. There is currently no word if foul play is suspected but we will continue to follow this story as it develops. Landon McNamara was thirty four years old.”

Muting the television, I glanced over at Ethan who was just as baffled as I was. “Once you pick up my mother, bring her and Angel up here, we have to brace ourselves,” I requested of him, rewinding the story on the DVR so that I could study it again. “She’s coming and she’s being hell with her.”
