Chapter 16

Dom

Weeks had gone by and we’d settled into a pretty good routine. I’d gone through the house and updated all the security systems including security cams and alerts that sounded every time an exterior door or window opened. I wouldn’t take any more chances when it came to Alexis and Layla. Besides, the safer Alexis felt, the longer the two of them would stay, or so I hoped.

I sat at the kitchen table on my laptop, flipping through the feed for each security camera when Alexis walked in.

“What are you working on?”

“Just looking at the security footage. I think I need to install another camera.”

“Another one? You've got those things all around the house.”

“There's a three-foot blind spot at the corner near the trash can.”

Alexis leaned over my shoulder to look at the screen and I could smell her light floral and vanilla scent. “So, you're afraid someone might teleport into that one three-foot space and the other cameras will miss him?”

“Ha-ha.”

“I think we’re secure.” She placed her hand on my shoulder and I covered it with my own.

“I just want to make sure you feel safe.”

“I do. You make me feel safer than I’ve ever felt.” Alexis pulled out the seat beside me and sat.

“So, you’re glad I talked you into staying here?”

“I am. I just hate that I’m being such a freeloader.”

“I told you, you're not. Layla is my daughter, and although it's no one's fault, I missed a lot that first year. Having you two here gives me a chance to get to know her better. Plus, I have to work and with you staying home, she doesn’t have to stay with a stranger.”

“I know, I just—”

“Besides, you contribute a ton by taking over a lot of the cooking and cleaning which I told you, you don’t have to do.”

“I have to do something to make myself feel useful.”

“Well then see, we both contribute in different ways. Just because you aren’t working in the traditional sense doesn’t mean you aren’t pulling your own weight around here.”

“You know we can’t just keep playing house like this forever, right?”

“Why not, if it works for all of us?”

“Well, for one thing, eventually you’re going to want to bring a date home and something tells me having your married baby-mama and a kid running around might not be a mood-setter.”

Her words were true but for some reason they hit me like a punch to the gut. In truth, I enjoyed having her in my home. I enjoyed spending time with her. She was smart, funny, and gorgeous. I found myself looking forward to going home at the end of a shift instead of thinking about going out to try to pick up a girl. If I was really truthful with myself, I was falling for her.

“I honestly hadn’t even thought about bringing another girl home.”

“Really? I mean, I get that things have been crazy but you’re a guy and we’ve been living here for weeks.”

“Alexis, I want to talk to you about something.
