Chapter 9

Ray watched the people in the courtroom. There were a lot more than she had thought there would be. It wasn’t like Caroline was known much around town. But then, she had been making herself a nuisance since she arrived. Ray didn’t want to think about the fact that she had more than likely killed that poor woman.

“What have I missed?” Levi had worked all night so that he could be here today with her. He looked a little tired. “I’ll be fine. I can see the worry in your eyes. But when the muse hits me with something, I have to work.”

“I understand that too. But couldn’t Muse be a little more timely?” He laughed, and people turned to look at him. “She looks like she has already won, doesn’t she?”

Caroline was sitting next to her attorney, Paul Jenkins, staring at the dais. The smile on her face was simple—just a smile—but it was the look around her eyes when she glanced at her that scared her a bit. Ray asked again if she’d been checked for a gun.

“I promise you, all is well. And even her purse was looked into. She’s not armed.” It still worried her.

Ray stood up when everyone else did when the judge entered the room. Christian had asked that she not sit with him up front. He was concerned that it would rile up Caroline before the trial began.

“I understand the necessity of this seating arrangement, Mr. Stanton, but I have seen your ugly mug on several occasions. Do you think you could talk Mrs. Stanton into sitting closer? I like a pretty face as much as the next man.” While the courtroom twittered a little in laughter, Ray made her way up. “David Stanton, come here as well, if you please.”

“He’s a minor, sir.”

Judge Black just waved him forward, and he sat with her too. Ray could almost feel that Caroline had turned and looked at them. Her evilness felt as if it were boring into her flesh. Ray was ready to say that she’d not be able to sit there when Judge Black cleared his throat.

“I want to make one thing clear right now, ladies and gentlemen of the court. That would include those that are sitting right here. I want you to remain civil to one another, and that means if you can’t look at someone without disdain, then you will be blindfolded. I will do it. I have no problem with that whatsoever, Ms. Spencer.” Caroline opened her mouth, to no doubt say something nasty. “And tape over your mouth will happen if the next words out of your mouth aren’t ‘yes, your honor, I’ll keep it nice.’”

She said nothing. But if her lips were any tighter together, Ray thought for sure she would not be able to unhinge her jaws. However, it must have worked. The feelings that she’d been getting before were no longer as bad.

“All right then, Mr. Jenkins, state your case and let’s get this pony and dog show started.
