Chapter Eleven

There had to be a way to get Emanuel’s father to back off, but if there was, Dorran hadn’t found it yet. It wasn’t that he hadn’t thought about it—he hadn’t stopped asking himself what to do ever since Emanuel had left his apartment yesterday. He didn’t have anything better to do anyway, and he wanted to help. It was better than to obsess over Eli and the reason he hadn’t called yet.

So what could Dorran do?

“You could kill him.”

Dorran glared at Francis. The ghost hadn’t been around in the past several days, and when he’d arrived earlier and seen Dorran’s face, he’d vowed not to leave Dorran’s apartment again. No matter how many times Dorran had tried to make him see that it wasn’t like he could do anything even if he was there if Dorran was assaulted again, he hadn’t budged. He’d stuck by Dorran’s side since last night, including when Dorran had taken a shower—even though Dorran had told him to leave him alone. He might have suspected Francis wanted to get a peek if he hadn’t seen how worried Francis really was.

“What?” Francis asked. He was sitting on the couch, his long legs stretched in front of him, crossed at the ankle. He looked real, so much so that Dorran could almost imagine touching him if he reached out.

He didn’t. “We can’t kill Emanuel’s father.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m not a killer, for one.”

“Then hire one like he did.”

“With what money, Francis?”

Francis pouted. “I wish I’d known you before. I’d have left you everything I had.”

This was where Dorran would normally reach over and pat Francis’ knee. He couldn’t, not unless he wanted to end up patting the couch. “I can’t kill the guy, no matter how much I wish I could.”

“You think he sent the asshole who hurt you?”

“Probably.” Dorran wouldn’t have told anyone else, but Francis couldn’t protect him, even though he’d probably try.

“Yet you’re still sticking your nose into this. Eli isn’t wrong when he says you don’t think things through, you know.”

“Is that what you think? That I should rethink telling him I’m not sure I can be with him?”

Francis’ expression twisted. “No. I think that if you really don’t think you can do it, then you did the right thing.”

“But?”

“But you have to be sure. As much as I don’t like Eli sometimes, he’s good for you, and he’s a good man, too. You can be happy with him.”

“But I have to let him hide me from his family.”

Francis linked his fingers together on his stomach. “Is it that important? I mean, are you going to go with him to Sunday lunch soon? Do you want to become his family’s friend?”

“No.” They were nice enough when he was a teenager, but now that he knew how they’d reacted to Eli being gay, Dorran wasn’t sure he wanted to have much contact with them.

“Then what’s the problem? You think Eli is going to cheat on you with one of the women his mother keeps pushing toward him?”

“Of course not.
