Chapter 13

Sammuel’s feet traversed the rugged terrain with ease. Fallen trees and thick underbrush did not hinder his progress toward the barking dogs. His blood brothers were around him and also had no difficulty navigating the woods.

When he entered a clearing a single vampire lay dead on the ground, Portia’s teeth still embedded in his throat. Several of the dogs surrounded the cat and her prey, barking with excitement.

“Where are the rest of them?” Frazour yelled.

Portia released the vampire and took off into the woods with Frazour fast on her heels. It appeared the synergy between the two former traveling companions had not been lost. Sammuel did not see the need for them all to follow the panther. If they were dealing with a small group of vampires, the creatures would have separated at this point.

“Spread out and see if you can find more,” Sammuel ordered. “Start heading back in the direction of the camp, as you make your way through the woods. Destroy every vampire you come across.”

Sammuel knew Portia would not have left the clearing if she had taken down a vampire traveling alone. Lorenz and Jace raced after Frazour and the cat, while Sammuel and Drake headed in the opposite direction.

“You like to play with fire, Drake,” Sammuel commented as the two looked for signs of the other vampires. “Be careful not to push Lorenz or Afton too far, particularly Afton.”

“I like to play, period,” Drake replied. “How else am I going to entertain myself until Star comes of age?”

“Star?”

“My soul mate,” Drake answered. “Starla was Alexandra’s mother’s name. She named her daughter after the woman, but calls her Star for short. Where are the other dogs? It appears Portia did all the work and they were merely observers.”

“I do not see any signs anyone or anything has been this way,” Sammuel said. “Go several hundred yards east and I will continue going this way. We can meet back at camp if we come up empty handed.”

Drake nodded and they both took off looking for any signs of other vampires. Sammuel turned once he reached five hundred yards and headed back to the clearing where they established camp for the evening. He was on what appeared to be a well-traveled path, but there did not appear to be any recent signs of use.

A birdcall some distance away alerted him that Drake had discovered something. He headed off the path and went in the direction of Drake’s summons. Sammuel picked up the pace when he heard metal meeting metal.

When he came across Drake, his brother was battling two vampires. With a swing of his sword, Sammuel decapitated the one closest to him. Before the vampire’s corpse hit the ground, Drake had dispatched the other.

Screams were heard from a distance and both men started running in the direction of the camp. Sammuel’s mind was crazed with worry about Miranda. He should have continued her weapon training, and not relied so heavily on her elemental gift.

When they entered the camp, he nearly fell over a dilapidated corpse that Emma must have wrung dry.
