Gotcha

‘Watch it, Jakes!’ Elena laughed as we collided outside my door. ‘I was just coming to see you, are you going somewhere?’

‘Just to see Gerrin,’ I answered. ‘Wait, why do you have your coat on?’

The rebellious glint behind her smirk told me all I needed.

‘Elena.’

She rolled her eyes. ‘Don’t look at me like that. It’s been five months and I miss it like hell. You game?’

‘No, Jean was right—it’s selfish of me to let you go.’

‘You’re not letting me do anything. Now, are you coming or not?’

‘No.’

‘Well, I guess I’ll see you later then.’

She winked and turned on her heel, coming to an abrupt halt when I didn’t let go of her arm.

‘I can’t let you, Elena, I promised Jean.’

‘Promised Jean what? That you’d take care of me?’ she scoffed. ‘I guess if you want to satisfy that fragile male ego then you’d better come protect me, oh hero of mine.’

I glared at her, flummoxed by her quick wit.

‘You impossible woman.’ I grabbed my coat.

❖

‘Are you ready to talk about Gerrin yet?’ Elena said, going straight in for the kill.

We were sitting on opposing tree stumps, eating wild blackberries. The light drizzle that dusted through the trees made for a damp picnic, but it didn’t matter, it was enough just to be back out here.

I frowned and shifted my gaze from the woodland floor. ‘What about him?’

‘You need to ask?’

‘What do you want from me, Elena?’

‘There’s no point burying your head in the sand. He’s out of control and he’s getting worse.’

My face fell. It was true; Gerrin was fast getting a reputation for cruelty in the caves. People knew him as someone you didn’t cross if you valued your life.

Elena reached over and grasped my hand, her ebony ponytail falling over one shoulder. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘I saw him with Cosbi the other day.’

‘And?’

‘It was on the anniversary… you know… of when our parents died. He was crying. Cosbi had his hand on his shoulder.’

‘And?’

‘Well, it’s wrong. Why didn’t Gerrin come to me? Why couldn’t he talk to me?’ I stopped before everything I felt came pouring out of my mouth.

‘You might need to make the first move,’ Elena said.

‘I’ve tried to speak to him. He shuts down as soon as I do. He’s afraid I’m going to walk if he tells me what’s really going on in that head of his.’

‘He’s that vulnerable?’

‘Ever since Italy. Something broke in him that day and he’s never dealt with it.’

‘What would he do if he lost you too?’

‘I don’t even want to think about it.’

‘How about anyone you get close to?’

I glanced up as she shrewdly hit on my worst fears. Gerrin’s feelings towards anyone new in my life were unpredictable. He saw them as intruders, unworthy and unwelcome in our broken family. I worried there would come a time when he’d show the people who I loved the same malice he showed anyone who crossed him. ‘He’ll only get one chance.’

‘He wouldn’t even get that from me. He’s unstable. It makes him dangerous, even to you.
