Itâs a date⦠Her words had been echoing in her thoughts ever since Lucas left the booth, and sheâd watched him as he disappeared into the ever-increasing crowds. What on earth had made her say that? Even if it was a date⦠and she wasnât totally sure if it was or wasnât.
âOf course it is. He asked you out, didnât he?â Ally asked, looking wildly smug as she watched a child fruitlessly throwing rings at the blocks, missing them every time. Brooke and Nicholas had gone home, and Ally had climbed over the counter and insisted on helping Ember run the game. So far sheâd spent most of her time asking questions about Lucas.
âYeah, but itâs not like weâre going out anywhere. Maybe he just wants somebody to hang around with while he wanders around the fair.â Ember frowned. âHe didnât say it was a date.â
âBut he didnât say it wasnât either.â Allyâs smile widened. âAnd he didnât contradict you when you said it was.â
Ember dropped her face into her hands. âUgh. Iâm so embarrassed. Maybe he wonât turn up.â Though the thought of that made her feel even worse. âWhen did this whole dating thing get so hard?â she asked Ally. âRemember how easy it was at school? A guy would write a letter and drew a âyes or noâ box on it then passed it to your best friend. Why canât it be like that?â
Ally chuckled. âI canât see a guy like Lucas Russell using a note to ask you out.â
The little boy threw his third ring, and it hit the back of the stall, landing nowhere near the wooden blocks. Ember gave him a smile, then offered him a plastic toy from the basket. âYou did great,â she told him. âThose rings are tough, you definitely deserve a toy for trying.â
When he left and Ember had taken the next customerâs money, she turned back to Ally. âHow do you know what kind of guy heâs like?â she asked.
âWell I guess I donât.â Ally tipped her head to the side. âBecause youâve been keeping him a secret. How long have you known him anyway?â
âSince he came to the school, heâs the firefighter I told you about.â No need to mention the embarrassing incident at Megasseyâs. Or the even more embarrassing non-date. A woman needed some secrets.
Allyâs eyes widened. âHeâs the firefighter? The one who carried you down the ladder?â
âHe didnât carry me down, I got down myself.â Okay, so that wasnât strictly true, but Ember really didnât want to add any more fuel to Allyâs fire. âAnyway, do you really think this is a date?â
âYou have no idea about guys, do you? Which is crazy considering you lived with one for so long.â Ally shook her head. âAlthough maybe that explains a lot. Will wasnât exactly a man, not when compared to Lucas.â She rolled her lip between her teeth, staring at Ember. âAnyway, from what I can tell, Lucas doesnât seem like the kind of guy who would be afraid of asking a girl out.
