CHADRICK

Staring at the letter that had been left in his locker, Chadrick’s jaw muscle ticked. He looked around, but no one was looking at him. Managing to keep himself from crumpling the piece of paper, he stalked out of the locker room and headed straight for the main office.

As he came in, Jim, the man who managed the gym (and normally that amused him), looked up in surprise.

“Where did this letter come from?” Chadrick asked, his voice coming out harsh, even to his ears.

Jim’s eyes widened as he brushed his dreadlocks back out of his face.

“Private messenger. It was a young boy, he said it should be left in your locker and that it wasn’t urgent, just a note from a fan.” Jim’s lips turned down, his brow furrowing. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s a threat. When was it delivered?”

“Yesterday.” Jim’s expression got harder. “I’ll have that delivery boy tracked down. We have cameras.”

Chadrick felt his muscles go lax as relief flooded through him. It was a generic threat then, not one specific to the fact he’d brought Scarlet to the gym with him today.

“Thank you.” He nodded, trusting Jim to take care of it.

“Chad… what kind of threat?” Jim stared at him with hard eyes. “Do I need to be worried?”

“No, I don’t think they’d target the gym.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “I meant worried about you, asshole.”

“Nah, I’ve got it handled. Keep me updated on what you’re able to track down.” He did mostly have this handled—what he didn’t have a handle on was his emotions. A threat to him wouldn’t have gotten him worked up this way. He would have handed it over to Scarlet or Cole and probably still seen what Jim had known, but he wouldn’t have reacted like this.

No, his issue was he could still taste Scarlet on his tongue, and he was holding a note that said, ‘We always hurt the ones we love.’

Considering she had just been introduced as his new lady love, it had to be a threat to her. Whoever sent it hadn’t wanted it sent to the studio or his home where someone else might intercept it. They’d had it left in his locker at his gym.

“Sorry, man,” Jim said. “I thought it was another prank or something. I won’t let any more letters go through to your locker, even if it is. And I’ll spread the word. The guys will all be on the lookout.”

“Thanks, I appreciate it.”

“Do you want me to call the cops?”

“No, I’ve got private security.”

Jim lifted one eyebrow, then a grin cracked his face.

“The lady?”

“Yeah. Don’t underestimate her.”

“Oh, trust me, I won’t. The ladies are always meaner.” Jim chuckled in a way that made Chadrick think he possibly had his own thing going with a mean lady. “And I won’t tell anyone.”

“I know.” Chadrick managed to give Jim his trademark wink before leaving the office, trying to get his anger under control. He wasn’t mad at Jim, though.

This wasn’t the first time someone had taken such a roundabout method of getting a letter to him, which was why Jim hadn’t thought twice about it.
