Nannie had transferred me from my converted cupboard to an empty guest room with a huge double bed. I sank into the middle of the soft mattress like I was lying on a cloud, so exhausted from my worries that I fell asleep before I even took a moment to appreciate how comfortable I was. I lay in dreamless blackness, only surfacing now and then when the ache in my head became too painful and I had to turn over on the soft pillows. When Nannie came to wake me in the morning I was shocked to see blood on the white slips, but after a moment I realised it was nothing more than a few drops that had escaped my dressing. She made me stay sitting in bed while she arranged a new one in the same spot, then bustled off to fetch some breakfast for me with the strict instruction that I was to spend the day at rest.
I didnât like the idea of sitting in bed all day when I knew that Faye could be hidden away at the Sideshow Oddities, terrified, alone and waiting for me to make good on my promise to protect her. The day was August 5th, Sid Webbâs nineteenth birthday, and in the evening that freak show building would be open for me to walk right into and explore. Whatever Nannie said about my condition, I was going to that party and I wasnât leaving it until Iâd found Faye. Nannie left me with a tray of breakfast as I plotted my escape, but the more I thought about how to get out of the guest house without being spotted, the more useless I realised I was without my abilities. There could be no slipping into Nannieâs head to check which room she was in before I made a dash for it.
It was then that I decided I needed advice, someone who knew about my powers, someone I could talk to without bringing my whole family up to Blackpool in a mad panic at once. I asked Nannie if I could come and use the telephone under the pretence of ringing Kit, but my sister was the last person I wanted to speak to. I was sure Iâd hear her lectures no sooner than I was feeling better, but for now I wanted to keep her in the dark. Once I was alone I asked the operator for the number, hoping it was right as the line began to ring.
âHello?â asked a strong Welsh tone on the other end.
âBlod,â I said immediately, âIs Doctor B there? Itâs Leighton. Itâs urgent.â
She huffed down the line. âOh Iâm fine, thanks for asking,â she said, but a moment later I heard her set the phone down as her echoing shout called for her husband.
Footsteps followed, then a manâs exhausted voice came on the line.
âSteven Bickerstaff?â
âDoctor B, I need your help,â I said. I knew he had recognised my voice by the contemptuous sigh he gave. âAnd your confidentiality.
