CHAPTER 5

Shelby spent the next three weeks getting back into the groove of her life. She started back teaching at the University and spent all the time she could with Gia and Logan. Greyson was doing a great job with the company and they were all trying to convince Sarah not to plead guilty to murder. Things were hectic but happy. Shelby was living full time at the house that Logan had remodeled for them and she, Gia and Logan were their own little family. Gia was an exceptional little athlete that loved the park and sports mainly soccer. Even if it was just kicking the ball from one field to the other and they never quite made it to one end or the other. Shelby loved the days they could all hang out together. Shelby had signed Gia up for a little league soccer team. The park they were having practice at today was one of the best parks in Atlanta. It boasted expansive greenery, rock gardens and artwork. The nearly 500,000 commemorative bricks that made up its main walkway were part of fund raising efforts for the Games. During scorching Atlanta summers, children frolic in the ground-level Olympic Rings, which periodically shoot streams of water through the seven rings. This park occasionally plays host to music concerts throughout the year. Flags honoring the nations that have played host to the Olympics in the past surrounded the fountain.

The game was about to start after the short practice when she got an urgent call from Cassidy.

“Shel, where are you?”

“I am at Lakeland Park. Cassidy, what’s wrong?” Shelby asked her. Shelby sounded like she was running from the devil in hell and she was crying. Cassidy never cried. Shelby and Cassidy had been best friends since they were little girls and in all that time she had seen her cry twice; both times had been when her father had given her a real live “Southern” spanking for bad behavior so if she was crying, someone was dead or on their way to the upper room.

“I really need to talk to you. Can you come over?” Cassidy said.

Shelby looked at Logan and Gia and then back to Logan looking for a little support as to what to say. She really did not want to disappoint any of them. Logan gave her the signal to go and see about her. Shelby grabbed her purse, kissed Logan and looked to see if she could get Gia’s attention before she left. But she was busy, so she prayed that Logan would be able to help her to understand why she left.

“I am on my way, Cass. Are you at home?” Shelby said rushing across the field to her car.

“Yes!” Cassidy said sharply, “and bring a bottle of wine.” Chuckling to herself Shelby promised her she would take care of it.

After stopping to get two bottles of Cassidy’s favorite wines, Shelby went straight to the Graham estate. Once again before Shelby could raise her hand to knock on the door good, Cassidy was opening it and pulling her into the house.
