I slide into the booth, sitting opposite Raven. “Where’s Seth?”

“Safe. For now.” Her eyes flick to the ring on my pointer finger. “Where is the item I requested?”

“Safe. For now,” I echo.

With my back to the room, I can’t see if Shaw has noticed my absence. It puts me on edge that he could burst into the alcove, ruining my plan. Not that I have a plan other than to see how far I can push Raven before she snaps.

She leans back in her seat and crosses her arms over her expansive chest. “I am under strict instruction to either retrieve the ring or return to my associate with you. Now, which will it be?”

I tap my finger against my chin, considering. If I leave with Raven, Shaw will feel the strain on our bond and follow, but I’ll discover the identity of the supe protecting her. If I tell her about stealing the wrong ring, she might compel me to return to Shaw Manor and retrieve the sapphire. Again, Shaw will know I’ve left.

Neither option benefits me much.

“I need proof that my brother is safe. There was a reason you sent me a photo of you and Seth in the lobby. You went to a lot of effort to use him as your bargaining chip.” I narrow my eyes. “Where is he, Raven?”

She takes her phone from a pocket in her dress, which I’m totally envious of, presses a few buttons, then places the device screen up on the table between us.

Seth is talking to a blonde man, who I can only see from behind. There’s something in the stranger’s figure and stance that’s vaguely familiar, but I shrug it off, figuring they’re just another wolf shifter. They have an air about them, a certain flair for muscular dramatics.

It’s clear by the footage that Seth is in the room beyond. Nearby, if the elevator behind him is anything to go by.

“Okay. Thank you,” I say, sliding her phone back across the table. “And no harm will come to him? Give me your word.”

“A low level witch will not order me to do anything.” She returns her phone to the cool as shit dress pocket. “Where is the ring, Tatum?”

“I don’t have it. Like I said earlier, I have a ring. A ring, not the ring. I ran into some problems, you see.” I hold up my hand and give her a closer glimpse of the bond ring. “You didn’t tell me which ring to take. Now this one has welded itself to my skin. I haven’t had another opportunity to go back into Shaw’s vault.”

“I see. And you didn’t think to mention this?”

“It’s not my fault you didn’t ask the right questions.” I lower my hand to my lap, relieved to see she doesn’t recognise the ring I’m wearing. If she did, if she discovered my tether to Shaw too soon, that would be bad. I wouldn’t find out who her ‘associate’ is.

She hisses. “Do not test me tonight, witch.
