CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Okay, let me make sure I’ve been following you,” came Contessa’s voice through the speaker of Lachlann’s cell phone. He had it propped on the eating table in the tiny house so the camera pointed forward.

Ótama sat immediately in front of the camera nursing dark-brewed tea, and Caryl, Daryn, and Princess Siobhan lingered close by.

“They’ve begun to actively recruit women again to join their ranks again,” Contessa recapped. “They’re luring them in with offers of social comfort and financial security, and obviously in a much more sophisticated way than they did when Lora’s mother was ensnared by them. In their meet-and-greets, who are they presenting themselves as? Obviously, they’re not making themselves publicly known as the Cult of Astrid.”

“No.” Ótama smoothed one of the tracts she’d picked up at the event and held the paper in front of the camera. “They’re marketing themselves as Women’s Advancement Services. Disgusting,” she spat. “They’re not giving women agency. They’re luring them in as pawns in a game the women know nothing about. Their bodies are commodities, and that’s all.”

“Tell her about the woman from the sweetshop,” Lachlann said.

Ótama drew in a long breath and let it out while she evidently gathered her thoughts. He was learning her cues. “I wasn’t able to make contact with her tonight. What I learned was that the current members of the group are rewarded in some way for inviting new prospects to the events. Before tonight, she hadn’t invited anyone, and hadn’t been making much contact with outsiders at all. I don’t know how long she’s been there or whether or not she still wants to be there. When I tried to make my way farther into the building, I was intercepted by custodial staff. I didn’t get a good look around.”

Contessa leaned back a bit with her head turned. She waved someone over and asked them, “Who do we have who hasn’t been seen? About the same age as Ótama looks?”

Ótama furrowed her brow.

Lachlann knew exactly what Contessa was plotting, and he fully condoned the scheme.

“Who are you talking to?” Ótama demanded.

Contessa didn’t respond. She was still in conference with whomever was in the room with her.

Lachlann leaned onto the back of her chair. “She’s looking for handmaidens for you.”

“But I don’t need—”

“I understand you want to do this alone. We all understand. To you, this feels like something you returned to this realm to do. The rest of us see this situation as a stain that needs to be eliminated with care and urgency. We do not want you harmed. Further, if more women move into the network at the same time as you, you will stand out that much less.”

Some of the tension she’d been holding in her shoulders loosened a bit. Perhaps she was starting to trust him. He hoped so. He was running out of words to use to convince her of his good intentions, and she wasn’t a fan of letting him show her, either.

“I need to be the one who deals with Anders,” she projected.
