“You still won’t give us a chance, will you? Even after we’ve come this far. Not long ago, you wanted to see my guts on the floor.”

Moira lifted her shoulder lazily from where it rested on the tangled bed sheets. “Mmm...maybe not on the floor...I’d put them in a protective case, at least.” Her heart flipped over the sight of his smile and she decided she didn’t mind the reaction so much now.

“But you still won’t give us a chance,” he pressed following mild laughter over her response.

“Zy...there are things you don’t know,” her words carried a faraway element. “If you did...you just...you might not push so hard for us to start up again.”

“There someone I don’t know about?”

She frowned, once again curious about the phrasing. “Why would you know anything? I mean,” she pushed up on an elbow and looked mildly embarrassed. “Not that there’s anything to tell and my parents wouldn’t-”

“I’ve been having you followed.”

Her jaw dropped. “Oh,” she managed after a silent minute.

Zyon toyed with a lock of her bright hair lying against the sheet. “Do I still get the protective case for my guts?”

She blinked, still dazed. “Why?” Was all she could manage.

Zyon moved to his back and rested a forearm over his brow while he studied the ceiling. “At first I just missed you so damn much,” he said, grinning over the admission. “After school was done-there was all that dying to grow up and forget and it worked, you know? For a while, anyway and then...there’s adulthood- being on your own to do whatever you fucking feel like. I felt like knowing where you were, how you were. I had the resources to do it and no one to tell me I couldn’t, so...”

Moira had turned to rest on her stomach, braced on her elbows while she looked down at him. “So...why didn’t you...?”

“What? Show up?” He flashed his striking grin once more. “The New Island-Ohio pipeline isn’t that long. I was already well informed of your plans for my guts and other choice parts of my body.”

Moira’s smile didn’t quite ring genuine. “What’d you find out?” She asked.

Zyon sobered as well. “I know about your business. I thought I did, anyway.”

“Why do you say that?”

“I’ve overheard a few conversations since I’ve been here. I take it you do more than find work and housing for abused women.”

She nodded. “Yeah, yeah I do.”

“Is it dangerous?”

“Not for me. Not so far.”

“May I ask what’s involved?”

She offered a skeptical smile. “Don’t you know that already? Or am I too fast for your detectives?”

He pushed up to brace on his elbows as well. “I don’t have you followed everyday- only now and again. I wasn’t so much interested in what you did for a living anyway.”

“There isn’t anyone else, Zyon.”

“It’s not my business.”

“Says the guy having me followed.”

“I didn’t want you mixed up with anymore of the wrong type. You’ve had enough of that.”

She processed that for a while before saying, “I find work and housing for abused women.
