Brady sat on a cot against the back wall, his body still bare and covered in bruises and scratches, no doubt from the struggle when he was captured. Then too, there was the beating administered by the big, gamma guards on the way down the mountain. That would account for a lot of it too. He was aching all over and his face, when he glanced into the pail of water and he’d seen it reflected back to him, was streaked with dried blood and dirt. He hadn’t bothered to wash. He figured it wouldn’t be long now before they came in to kill him. The worst thing was that he knew he deserved it.

He’d done the unthinkable—attacked the bloodlust of the pack’s alpha wolf. The innocent human bloodlust! It certainly accounted for the small stature of the wolf when it transformed to go on the defensive, and Brady’s ease in taking him down. He might have noticed it more if he hadn’t been so distracted. He closed his eyes and groaned when he remembered what he’d done. In between the angry kicks of the guards, he’d managed to understand that he had almost killed a young human, whose name was Nicky. Nicky—not Ian, the beta who was the mate of Logan Winters. Humiliation and shame washed over him again. How the fuck had he messed this up so badly?

He should have known immediately that the young wolf wasn’t a beta—wasn’t even a natural wolf. But he had just leaped onto the man going up on the porch—the man he knew had to be Logan Winters and the second he touched him, his mind had screamed, mate! The realization that the man was his bloodmate had slammed into his consciousness like an axe. The fucking beautiful, murdering bastard who had killed Caroline and the other innocents couldn’t be his mate! That was simply insupportable, deranged! How did something like this even happen?

He’d heard the shouts of the young boys earlier and come to see what was going on. He watched them play ball and he’d watched Logan Winters and the others laughing and enjoying himself. The idea that Winters was still alive was enflaming enough to him, without watching him being happy. He hadn’t been able to stand it, so he’d lain in wait for them to come back to the school where he’d seen the man before. He’d hidden in the bushes and when the man he’d identified as Logan Winters stepped up onto the porch, he’d jumped on him, fully intending to wipe the smile off his face for good. To rip him apart and finally avenge his mate and the other members of his pack. He’d sworn a blood oath to do so and his focus on the man was absolute.

Then he’d touched him and from the first brief brush of his claws over Logan’s skin, the knowledge that this was his true mate had torn through him. He had leaped backward, his wolf incensed by the idea and at the same time furious that he might have hurt him.
