The restaurant he chooses is perfect—a sunny bistro about twenty minutes away. It’s early still, so there aren’t many people there. We opt to sit out on the covered patio which is empty aside from us.

“This is lovely,” I say.

“Yeah, it’s a great little place. I went to high school with the owner.”

“So you’re from the area?”

“Born and raised,” he says. “I went to the academy after high school and got lucky enough to get a job with the local police station after I graduated.”

“How long have you been a detective?”

He grins and runs his hand through his hair as if he’s a little self-conscious. “I made detective two years ago, so I’m still pretty new at it.”

“Do you like it?”

“I really do,” he says. “When I was a patrol officer, I spent most of my time reacting to things. I never really got to work a case to closure. Now, I have the ability to make sure every avenue has been explored.”

“It must be frustrating when you can’t solve a case.”

He shakes his head. “You can’t think about it like that, or you’ll drive yourself crazy. I figure every case is solvable, I might just not have all the information I need yet.”

I nod. “That makes sense.”

“What about you?” he asks. “Have you always wanted to be a kindergarten teacher?”

“I knew I wanted to do something with early childhood education,” I say. “I know that teaching little guys isn’t for everyone—not even for most people—but I love it. They’re just so honest and open.”

“Do you want any of your own?” He’s looking at me intently.

I hesitate. It’s a heavy question for a first date, but I don’t see any point in misleading him. If it scares him off, then it wasn’t meant to be. “Yeah, I really do.”

“Me too,” he says. “I’ve got five brothers and sisters. I can’t imagine not having a big family.”

“But no kids yet?” I ask. He’s old enough that he could have been married before.

“No,” he says. “I’ve been waiting for the right woman.”

“You haven’t found her yet?” I ask, a tremble in my voice.

“If you’d asked me two weeks ago, I would have said no.”

I have no idea how to respond to that, but I can’t help the small smile that plays across my lips. I know exactly what he means.

We take our time with the meal. It feels like I’ve known Nico forever, and my initial discomfort dissipates quickly. He’s witty and smart, and I feel myself falling for him more and more with each passing minute. By the time we finish, I’m not ready for the night to be over.

“It’s early still,” he says as we walk out of the restaurant. “Do you play pool?”

I look at him sharply, trying to see if he’s messing with me.

“What?” he says, giving me an innocent look that instantly makes me suspicious. “It’s a civilized game.”

“Everything about this conversation is telling me not to take any bets you offer. You’re a pool shark, aren’t you?”

“Hey, it’s not my fault if I start out playing poorly and then get better in a hurry.
