Joist Joinery

Joist Pocket Layout and Cutting

1. From the control point, measure out to the sides of each pocket and transfer lines 41⁄2 inches down the inside face of the sill.

2. On the top of the sill, measure in 5 inches from the arris to mark the backs of the pockets of the drop-in joists. (Measure in 71⁄2 inches for the housing of the center joist.)

3. Cut the side of the pocket from corner to corner to sever the end grain as much as possible.

4. Bore out the back of the pocket from the top surface, being careful not to drill too deep, since the bottom is a bearing surface for the joist.
