Administrative Staff: The Need for More…

Faculty requires administrative support for such things as travel bookings, managing appointments, purchasing, financial accounts, reimbursements, and much else. Administrative staff performs many tasks on campus including campus upkeep, library management, help with alumni affairs, careers office, and so on.

In top US universities, each faculty member has an administrative assistant or shares an assistant with one or two others. These assistants manage the day-to-day work of the office. At the department level, there are additional staff to oversee various programs and departmental affairs. In contrast, Indian faculty members typically have no personal staff. Instead, the department has a pool of staff that the faculty may approach for help. For example, in a typical department at IIT Mumbai, about 7–8 departmental staff assist around 40 faculty members.6 Our faculty rates availability of sufficient and capable staff the second lowest among 14 parameters of quality (below average, 2.5 on a 1–5 scale).
