45. Play small ball: the value of 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 play

In the youth soccer world, several years ago U.S. coaches finally caught on to a teaching technique that football coaches in Europe were using. Instead of playing 11-on-11 at youth soccer games, teams were playing 6-on-6 and reducing the size of the field. Two teams playing each other might have 2 small games going on at the same time instead of one bigger game on a bigger field.

What had youth European soccer coaches learned?

To get better at soccer, young players needed more touches. By having roughly the same number of players out on the field but split into 2 games, the number of touches doubled. Fewer players opened up the field. Players advanced their skills more quickly.
