Bruce stood behind a stage curtain with Henderson, Hershey, and Klaus, peeking out at the thousands of people filling the auditorium at the special winter assembly in New York. The assembly had been called because David’s existence was attracting so many into the fold, and so many were thirsting to see and hear him.

The writing committee had come up with a speech for David to give, and Bruce had helped him practice it in his room in the evenings. David spent his days in the Bethel library with Jonathan, reading the Bible and devouring Watchman publications like a famished man consuming bread.

The speech itself sounded very much like last year’s convention speech, except that there was a strong hint that Armageddon had already begun, and a brief mention of the fact that more Ancient Worthies were expected to be resurrected any day.

Bruce felt that David’s oratory style was basically good, although he appeared slightly bored with the material.

Now the auditorium was packed with Watchmen and their “studies” who were longing to see King David with their own eyes, and hear his message. The media was also in full force, including Peter Frawley.

Brother Henderson was at the podium introducing David: “Brothers and sisters,” he said, with a broad smile, “how privileged we all are to serve Jehovah at this time, here in God’s spiritual paradise, soon to be a physical one as well!”

Only perfunctory applause greeted this statement. The crowd was anxious to see David.

“As you know, I have someone special I’d like to introduce to you today. Someone you’ve all read about in your studies of God’s Word. Someone who wrote parts of God’s Word! Someone who followed after the truth and served Jehovah all of his days. Someone who is here with us now as proof that the resurrection has begun!”

The audience took this as their cue and began applauding in earnest. But Henderson did not leave, and David did not appear. Realizing that Henderson had more to say, the applause stopped quicker than it had begun.

“Brothers and sisters,” Henderson said, taking a long pause to increase the suspense, “I give you King David!”

Henderson stepped beside the podium, and turning to look offstage, joined the now riotous applause.

There was a long delay before he appeared. During that time the applause had time to die down somewhat, but when David finally walked onto the stage, the applause, shouting, and whistling renewed itself even louder than at first. Henderson walked towards him and met him halfway. Shaking his hand and clasping his shoulder, he ushered him over to the podium, then with one arm around David he turned to face the thousands of flashing cameras.

People were slightly disappointed to see him in modern attire, but the Governing Body had decided that a tunic was inappropriate for a New York winter, and of course they had destroyed his overalls as soon as the opportunity arose.

When the applause finally started to quiet down Henderson walked off the stage,
