Chapter Thirty-two

“There y’all are,” Bea greeted us as we walked in the front door. “I put the Book Club in the dining room with the door closed. There are chicken salad sandwiches, fruit salad, and a crudité platter on the buffet.”

“A what kind of platter?” I asked.

Bea chuckled. “Oh, honey, it’s just a fancy name for a veggie tray,” she explained. “But it sounds so much better than carrots, celery, and ranch dressing, don’t you think?”

“Much fancier,” I agreed, and knowing Bea, it probably was.

Then Bea quickly glanced over her shoulder and lowered her voice. “Brooke asked for her dinner to be delivered to her bedroom,” she said through thinned lips. “Seems she has lots of work to do.” She sent Van a look of disapproval. “I do hope she’s finding the maid service quite adequate.”

“Ouch,” Kyle whispered .

“I’m sorry, Bea,” Van replied. “I can talk to her. Let her know that she’s out of line.”

Bea sighed and shook her head. She stepped over and gave Van a hug. “No, I should apologize,” she offered. “I actually didn’t want her downstairs tonight anyway. So, her staying in her room was a blessing. That woman just gets up under my skin, that’s all.”

“I totally sympathize with you,” I replied. “There’s just something about her that sets me off.”

Bea nodded eagerly. “Right? Like fingernails on a chalkboard,” she agreed. Then she sighed. “But I suppose it’s my Christian duty to look beyond her obvious flaws and try to like her anyway.”

“Like the ‘Bless Your Heart’ club,” I suggested.

Bea laughed. “Oh, honey, I can handle the ‘Bless Your Hearts,’” she reasoned. “But this woman, I just don’t trust her. ”

I thought about Bea’s words as I sat at the dining room table, gathering my thoughts before I confided in the rest of the Book Club.

Trust.

I glanced around the room as the ladies filed in, greeted each other, and filled their plates. How much did I really know about these women?

Could one of them be under the influence of Congressman Patterson?

Could one of them be part of the group that caused my mother’s death?

“You look like you just bit into a sour pickle,” Momma said as she took the seat next to me. “What’s on your mind?”

“Trust,” I whispered.

Momma looked around, following my recent gaze, and then shook her head. “You’ve got no cause to doubt the loyalty of any of these women,” she said. “They have been there for you since my funeral. And they’ve got you out of some pretty tight situations. Don’t let someone else’s lies poison your heart.”

I sighed softly. She was right. I knew that Mayor Newsom was involved with the Sons of Mississippi; I heard her confess it myself. I knew she had encouraged me to sell the salon right after I had the same encouragement from my friendly neighborhood banker. I knew she had an agenda.

I looked around the room at the women gathered here, at a moment’s notice, to drop everything going on in their lives to help me.
