CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“You can say whatever you like, but I know it was you.”

It was lunchtime at the school, and Cora Muller sat serenely on a bench in the yard. Her expression was one of childlike innocence.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mary Stoltzfus,” she protested gently. “Why should you think that I had anything to do with it? Haven’t I been telling you for months that Seth is gorgeous? It’s clear that I’m not the only girl who noticed.”

She paused and sighed. “He has the most beautiful green eyes! Almost as beautiful as Isaac’s – but not quite.”

“I saw your niece there too,” Mary nodded grimly, “are you trying to tell me that she wasn’t your accomplice?”

Cora giggled. “Emma has been dying for Seth for the last six months – poor little thing! He’s kind to her, of course, but – she’s so young. She made up dream castles, I’m afraid.”

Mary narrowed her eyes.

“Do you think I believe that the most popular girls in town are in love with that little weasel? What do you take me for?”

“Oh, Mary,” Cora sighed patiently, “believe whatever you like. I don’t understand what you have against Seth, but it doesn’t matter. You saw for yourself how many other girls adore him. One of them will snap him up soon, and you won’t have to worry about him anymore.”

Mary fell silent, but stared at her friend’s face in deep suspicion.

“He’ll probably be waiting for me when I get home tonight,” she scowled. “I have you to thank for this, Cora Muller!”

“I wish I could take credit for it, Mary,” Cora said piously, and folded her hands. “You should be so lucky.”

***

At the end of the day, Mary packed up her things and walked home from school. She briefly considered disappearing into the woods, and not coming out again until after dark. But then it occurred to her that if she wanted the truth, it would be much easier to pick Seth’s brain, than Cora’s.

The thought of grilling him gave her a certain grim satisfaction.

When she arrived at the house, she was relieved to see that Seth was nowhere in sight. She trudged up the porch steps and dumped her books on the dining room table. There was a sheaf of envelopes there.

She picked them up and riffled through them. There were a few for her.

“Is that you, Mary?” her mother called.

“Yes, mamm.”

“Can you go out to the garden and bring in my basket? I think I left it there this morning.”

“Okay.”

Mary stuck the sheaf of envelopes in her pocket and walked out onto the porch. Sure enough, there was Seth Troyer walking up the path to the door, as if her irritation had conjured him up.

He smiled as he approached, and she had to admit, grudgingly, that he had white, even teeth.

“Hello, Mary.”

She looked off into the distance. “Hello, Seth.”

“I was hoping to catch you. I brought the book. I hope you like it.”

He handed her a beautiful antique book of poetry. The book’s cover was a dull red leather embossed with gold.
