CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
âYou can say whatever you like, but I know it was you.â
It was lunchtime at the school, and Cora Muller sat serenely on a bench in the yard. Her expression was one of childlike innocence.
âI donât know what youâre talking about, Mary Stoltzfus,â she protested gently. âWhy should you think that I had anything to do with it? Havenât I been telling you for months that Seth is gorgeous? Itâs clear that Iâm not the only girl who noticed.â
She paused and sighed. âHe has the most beautiful green eyes! Almost as beautiful as Isaacâs â but not quite.â
âI saw your niece there too,â Mary nodded grimly, âare you trying to tell me that she wasnât your accomplice?â
Cora giggled. âEmma has been dying for Seth for the last six months â poor little thing! Heâs kind to her, of course, but â sheâs so young. She made up dream castles, Iâm afraid.â
Mary narrowed her eyes.
âDo you think I believe that the most popular girls in town are in love with that little weasel? What do you take me for?â
âOh, Mary,â Cora sighed patiently, âbelieve whatever you like. I donât understand what you have against Seth, but it doesnât matter. You saw for yourself how many other girls adore him. One of them will snap him up soon, and you wonât have to worry about him anymore.â
Mary fell silent, but stared at her friendâs face in deep suspicion.
âHeâll probably be waiting for me when I get home tonight,â she scowled. âI have you to thank for this, Cora Muller!â
âI wish I could take credit for it, Mary,â Cora said piously, and folded her hands. âYou should be so lucky.â
***
At the end of the day, Mary packed up her things and walked home from school. She briefly considered disappearing into the woods, and not coming out again until after dark. But then it occurred to her that if she wanted the truth, it would be much easier to pick Sethâs brain, than Coraâs.
The thought of grilling him gave her a certain grim satisfaction.
When she arrived at the house, she was relieved to see that Seth was nowhere in sight. She trudged up the porch steps and dumped her books on the dining room table. There was a sheaf of envelopes there.
She picked them up and riffled through them. There were a few for her.
âIs that you, Mary?â her mother called.
âYes, mamm.â
âCan you go out to the garden and bring in my basket? I think I left it there this morning.â
âOkay.â
Mary stuck the sheaf of envelopes in her pocket and walked out onto the porch. Sure enough, there was Seth Troyer walking up the path to the door, as if her irritation had conjured him up.
He smiled as he approached, and she had to admit, grudgingly, that he had white, even teeth.
âHello, Mary.â
She looked off into the distance. âHello, Seth.â
âI was hoping to catch you. I brought the book. I hope you like it.â
He handed her a beautiful antique book of poetry. The bookâs cover was a dull red leather embossed with gold.
