CHAPTER 11
THE TITANIC HITS THE ICEBERG (& A VINTAGE SOFA)
I should have been exhausted from taking the red-eye flight back from Los Angeles, but I was too anxious waiting in Starbucks for Ruby to arrive. Quite the contrast from the laid-back afternoon and early evening meetings that had consumed the entire ten days I was away. The meetings I was able to secure encouraged me that I was indeed not a washup, but still relevant. It had reinvigorated my hustle so much so that I couldn’t recall a single daytime minute that I wasn’t meeting with a studio executive, production company, or someone who could be a catalyst for my transition. The grind reminded me of one of my old sayings, “Just because your bank account hasn’t caught up with your hustle doesn’t make your hustle any less righteous.” Somewhere, that had been lost, but it had crept back into my spirit while plotting my move to Hollywood. I was also able to see my friends, who were more excited about my relocation than I was, especially the ones I’d known in New York. There were plenty of transplants there – mostly other creatives and entrepreneurs that had been outpriced and outpaced by New York City. L.A. was no longer the plastic parade of Barbie’s and Ken’s it used to be and every one of my friends that had moved there seemed to love it, which surprised both them and me.
Partner the good fortune of the business meetings and my friends with Hollywood’s best asset — the weather — and the decision to go left was becoming increasingly the best idea I’d had in years. I worried though that leaving all of my sister-friends now when they were in various states of turmoil and transition was not a good idea, but I would always come back to the fact that I had to live my own life. Plus, they were all grown and, despite acting like it way too much, I wasn’t their daddy or their man.
I also went out west more refreshed than I had been in a while. Even with the dramatic climax, St. Barth’s did my mind and body good. Josh was released from jail on bond and immediately returned to rehab, which also shuttered the film he was working on. Lauren was existing. Nothing more, nothing less. Vikki was moving ahead with her wedding and had decided to make the destination Jamaica. It had been awhile since I’d spoken to Rebecca or seen Krissy. I was going to change that this afternoon when Krissy and I lunched. I’d plan to catch up with Rebecca soon, too.
The present moment, however, was about clearing up whatever was going on between Ruby and me. Well, what was going on with Ruby because despite being played, I still didn’t feel any true ill will toward her. Sure, I didn’t like the way I had been treated, but friendships sometimes hit a bump for a myriad of reasons. In my book,
