Modern illustration of La Salleâs death
During the journey, somewhere near present-day Navasota, Texas, La Salleâs expedition stopped to secure food. He sent some of his men ahead to obtain provisions that had been stashed away during an earlier journey. The advance party found that the food was spoiled. Fortunately, La Salleâs Shawnee guide, Nika, shot two buffalo. The men stopped to smoke the meat, but soon an argument arose about who was given what portion to eat. La Salleâs nephew, Colin Morenger, took control and dictated to the others who would get what portion. This was a final insult to the other men, who had endured countless hardships. That night they planned the murder of Morenger. They succeeded, and a few days later when La Salle rejoined his men, they killed him too.
