Chapter 13

Gym. I never thought that I would ever dread coming to this class. I mean, Alveya and Kristy were discouraging, but not to the point that I dreaded my chance to run and work off some steam. Today was different though. I was tired, my body ached, I was hot all over, and all of my senses were heightened to the max. I could hear so well that I actually had to pop in my headphones in order to block out some of the noise.

Around this same time last month I had this same feeling, only a lighter version of it. Now all of these symptoms bombarded my body all at once, making me feel horrible.

Oddly enough, Alveya must’ve noticed, because she kept her distance from me. Like really kept her distance, but every cough, sneeze, or sudden move that I made, her eyes would bounce right back to me. At first, I thought that I was just seeing things, but sure enough, Alveya was back to watching me like a hawk, only she looked worried. I knew that she wasn’t actually concerned about me, so what could she have been so worried about?

“Alright ladies and gents!” Mrs. Lanette yelled. “Keep it moving! You’re being tested!” She stood off on the side of the track as we each ran at our own pace. We had just finished strength testing, which I nearly failed in my opinion, and now I was failing at running. Of all the days to be timed, it just had to be this one.

Ricardo jogged up to the side of me, “Come on Crystal. You got this.”

I wiped the ever dripping sweat from my forehead and took a deep breath, “No, today is not the day.”

“You okay?” He took a deep breath to control his breathing.

“I’ll be fine once I lay down. Just...probably need some rest. You go ahead, alright?”

Ricardo looked slightly worried, but he reluctantly jogged ahead. I knew that I wasn’t going to fail this test, but I wasn’t going to get an A+ either. I was running at a C average, with Kristy and her groupies right behind me.

“Not so fast today, are you Crystal?” Kristy asked as she lined her shoulder up with mine.

I used the little energy that I had to glance at her and was pissed at how confident that she looked. She really thought that she was going to win this! Hell, maybe she would.

Kristy gave a smug smile, “Pretty sure that you were out hoeing with Fred last night. Probably trying to get your mind off of Alveya, huh?”

I already had a frown on my face, so it only deepened. I felt the tingling sensation in my eyes, but fought very hard to force it away. It had never been so hard in my life.

“Figures,” Kristy giggled before running ahead of me.

My eyes stayed on her as she ran the curve, making her way for the finish line. There was just the straight away left, then she would be done.
